Ernest S. Fletcher, Sr (1925-1995)

R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Ernest S. Fletcher of Temple, at the
1-2 age of 70, has brought a great loss to the many friends and
1-3 relatives of this distinguished Texas businessman and civic leader;
1-4 and
1-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher will be fondly remembered as a loving
1-6 family member, a loyal friend, and an upstanding member of his
1-7 community who demonstrated an exemplary concern for the well-being
1-8 of others; and
1-9 WHEREAS, A fourth-generation resident of Bell County, he was
1-10 well regarded as a leader in the poultry industry, and his
1-11 innovative and highly effective management skills helped parlay his
1-12 family's farm business into a formidable agribusiness corporation,
1-13 which grew to become the largest of its kind in Texas and among the
1-14 top five in the country; Mr. Fletcher also distinguished himself as
1-15 president of Tex-Best Turkeys, the largest turkey processing plant
1-16 in the state; and
1-17 WHEREAS, He was the youngest person elected as director of
1-18 the Texas Grain and Feed Dealers Association and continued to work
1-19 toward the benefit of agribusiness at the state and national levels
1-20 through his leadership of several key groups, including the Texas
1-21 Poultry Improvement Association, the Texas Egg Council, the
1-22 National Turkey Federation, and the Texas Poultry Federation; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher also served the local business
1-24 community as the founder, board chairman, and chief administrative
2-1 officer of Texas Bank and Trust of Temple and offered valuable
2-2 insight as a member of the Temple Manufacturing Association and the
2-3 Temple Industrial Development Board; and
2-4 WHEREAS, He worked tirelessly to promote air quality
2-5 throughout the region as a member of the Bell County Industries
2-6 Clean Air Campaign, and he was recognized for his exceptional
2-7 efforts by the National Park Service in 1971; and
2-8 WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Fletcher
2-9 maintained an abiding commitment to community service and
2-10 generously contributed his time, talents, and unflagging energies
2-11 to the benefit of several worthy organizations, including the
2-12 Temple United Way, the Temple Law Enforcement Advisory Board, and
2-13 the Senior Citizens Board; and
2-14 WHEREAS, Moreover, he positively affected health issues
2-15 throughout the community as an esteemed member of the King's
2-16 Daughters Hospital Association and as a charter member of the Bell
2-17 County Council for Scott and White Memorial Hospital; and
2-18 WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher was deeply committed to education
2-19 issues as well and helped establish and fund an assistant
2-20 professorship in food science at Texas A&M University and also was
2-21 instrumental in the development of the university's food science
2-22 building; in addition, he worked to enhance educational
2-23 opportunities in the Temple community through his service with the
2-24 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Education Foundation; and
2-25 WHEREAS, He led a full and active life, and his favorite
2-26 pastimes included researching history and his family's Scottish
2-27 ancestry as a member of several organizations, including the Sons
3-1 of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Republic of Texas, and
3-2 Clan Donald USA, to name but a few; and
3-3 WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher was a man of great vision whose
3-4 remarkable contributions to the quality of life in Temple will
3-5 continue to have a profound effect on the members of that community
3-6 for generations to come; though his special presence will be missed
3-7 by all who knew him, his unique spirit will surely live on in the
3-8 hearts and minds of the many people whose lives he touched; now,
3-9 therefore, be it
3-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
3-11 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Ernest S. Fletcher
3-12 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
3-13 son, Ernest Fletcher, Jr., of Arlington; to his daughters, Missie
3-14 Fletcher Torrent and Diane Dougal, both of Austin; to his two
3-15 grandchildren; and to his many other friends and relatives; and, be
3-16 it further
3-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-18 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
3-19 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
3-20 Ernest S. Fletcher.
