HUBBARD SCOTT CAVEN III, "SCOTTY", beloved son, brother, and grandson, died tragically in an automobile accident Sunday, August 8, 2004. Scotty was returning home from Austin where he planned to attend the University of Texas this fall as a member of the Plan II Honors Program. Born September 8, 1985 in Houston, Texas, Scotty was the son of Vivien and Hubbard Scott Caven Jr. In addition to his parents, Scotty is survived by sisters, Lindsey and Jennie V, and brother Preston, and loving grandmother, Isabel R. Caven of Austin and grandfather, William R. Hester. Scotty loved life and lived his to the fullest. He graduated cum laude from St. John's School, where he was an honor student who read voraciously, wrote with uncommon clarity and precision, and listened with a keen sense of skeptical detachment rare in one so young. He was especially adept at asking penetrating questions that not only enlivened classroom proceedings, but also frequently led his peers to new and creative conclusions.

His fascination with Scottish history and culture is legendary. Inspired by his beloved teacher and mentor, Dr. Charles Orson Cook, one of his many ambitions was to teach history one day. Scotty exhibited his passion for Scotland whenever he could, wearing his Scottish kilt and formal jacket and spent a summer studying history at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

At St. John's he was active in many areas, including serving his fellow classmates with distinction as a Senior Prefect - the most important student office on campus. In addition, he served as an editor of the yearbook. Scotty was accomplished in athletics, especially lacrosse, and was a champion water skier amazing his friends with his ability to both ski barefoot and wakeboard. Scotty had a great passion for music. He loved the Beatles and received an original Hofner bass guitar, like Paul McCartney's from his father as a surprise Christmas gift. Scotty was a loyal friend and loving family member and will be dearly missed by so many.

Predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Mary Hester, and his paternal grandfather, Hubbard Scott Caven Sr., Scotty is also survived by his aunts/uncles Kathleen and Charles Chaffin, Michael Hester, and Mary Gay and Alan Merritt, cousins, Chris, Carrie, Corby and Clint Chaffin, Evan Hester, and Kristen and Joey Bienvenu., and his Godparents, Bill Price and Jane and Jimmy McCarroll.

Friends are invited to a visitation with the family at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons Funeral Directors at 1010 Bering Drive on Wednesday evening, August 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service for Scotty will be conducted Thursday, August 12, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, followed by a graveside ceremony at Glenwood Cemetery, 2525 Washington Avenue. Pallbearers will be David Atlas, Paul Barndt, Clint Chaffin, Clay Cole, George Easterly, Bradley Eisemann, Chris Gibbs, Bo Gremillion, Joe Herman, Matthew Hines, Walker Kahle, Elizabeth King, Ernst Leiss, Gregory Patrinelly, Ranjan Ramchandani, Brandon Sparks, James Timmons, William Warren, and Zac Wilson. For those wishing to remember Scotty, memorial contributions can be made to St. John's School, Christ Church Cathedral or the charity of your choice.
