Mrs. Clayton D. Baird
DOROTHY ALEXANDER BAIRD passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, November 14, 1999, following a valiant battle with cancer. Her family and friends will be forever inspired by her quiet courage, her dignity and grace in the face of overwhelming adversity, and the strength of her faith as she remained steadfast in her nearly four-year attempt to overcome her illness. Born Dorothy Nell Alexander in Abilene, Texas, she was preceded in death by her parents, Wroe and Dorothy Nell Alexander of Beaumont, Texas. After graduating from Lamar High School, Dorothy attended the University of Houston before marrying her husband of 56 years, Clayton Deward Baird , Sr. She is survived by her devoted husband Clayton; son Clayton Baird , Jr. and wife Melissa; daughter Debbie Baird ; sister Ann Flowers Tanner and husband Tom; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of loving friends.

Dorothy was an artist, expressing her talent through both oil and watercolor painting as well as sculpting, and musically through piano and string bass. She was also a gifted dancer, dancing for over 10 years with the G'Ann Boyd Dancers who performed modern dance and folk ballet at the Museum of Fine Arts and various local churches. An avid golfer, Dorothy won many amateur golf trophies. Active throughout her life in many organizations, Dorothy was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority; the Briar Rose Garden Club; the Lady Washington Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; and the San Jacinto Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Committed to community service, Dorothy served as a volunteer at the Houston State Psychiatric Institute; served as a docent in the Children's Zoo at the Houston Zoo; volunteered with the Assistance League, and served as a Cub Scout den mother. But her greatest joy in her community work has been her dedicated service to Bayou Bend. For the past 22 years Dorothy has served in many capacities on the Board of Bayou Bend, culminating in her position as the Chairman of the Bayou Bend Docent Organization and as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Museum of Fine Arts. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Dorothy's life on Friday, December 3 , 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at Westminster Methodist Church at 5801 San Felipe. A reception will be held immediately following the service at Houston Country Club, 1 Potomac Drive.
