From The Times of London Saturday 9 May, 2009 Iain Richard Murray O.B.E. (F.C.O.) Died suddenly at home on 2nd May 2009, aged 64. Beloved husband of Norma and father to Andrea and Innes. A light has gone out and he is greatly missed. The Funeral Service will take place at 2pm on Friday 15th May at St George's Church, Wash Common, Newbury. No flowers please but donations in lieu. Her Majesty’s Consul-General in Houston Iain Murray studied Political Science at the University of Kent (Canterbury) where he was one of the initial intake when the University opened in 1965. He also studied International Relations at the University of London. After joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Iain’s first overseas posting , in 1970, was to Accra as the Economic Attaché. From 1972 – 1975 he was posted to Ethiopia as Political Officer. This was during the last 18 months of the Emperor Haile Selassie’s Government and the first 18 months of the Revolution. Three years in Rio de Janeiro as Vice Consul (Commercial) and four years in Oporto as Consul followed. Iain then moved back to London in 1983 as one of Mrs Thatcher’s Press Officers. In 1985 he returned to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. From 1987 to the end of 1991 he was Chargé d’Affaires at the British Embassy in San Salvador, (during a period of Civil War). His subsequent duty tour in London was followed by a posting to Kuala Lumpur as Commercial Counsellor (1994-1997). He was Consul-General in Sao Paulo, and simultaneously, Director of Trade Promotion and Investment in Brazil from 1997-2000. Iain and his wife, Norma, a Russian/French graduate and a teacher of French, came to Houston in January 2001, (with their two boxer dogs Tipsy and Whisky) where Iain was Consul-General until he retired from the Diplomatic Service in 2004. The Consulate-General in Houston was responsible for the states of Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Colorado Iain’s interests included travelling and history, losing golf balls (!), finding a quiet corner to smoke his pipe without offending anybody, and whisky. In October 2000, Iain was inducted as a Keeper of the Quaich at Blair Athol Castle in the Highlands of Scotland. The Keepers is a society, drawn largely from the whisky business and its friends, dedicated to its promotion and appreciation. The guest of honour at the same ceremony was Philip Lader, the American Ambassador to the Court of St James, and also present was the Duke of Argyll. |
