WILLIAM FRANKLIN SCRUGGS SR., went to be with his Lord on October 5, 2003. His spirit will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
Bill, who was proud to be a fifth generation Texan, was born in Houston, Texas on September 9, 1924.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joyce Lavonne Scruggs , who passed away in March of 2003. They had been married for 56 years.
He is also preceded by his mother, Hallie Hallonquist Crouch and his father, Edwin Theodore Scruggs , his brother Edwin Theodore Scruggs Jr. and his wife Elaine. Ted and Elaine were Bill and Joyce's best friends and also has been married for 56 years when they both passed away in the year 2000.
Bill is survived by his sons William Franklin Scruggs Jr., Laurent Rix Scruggs and his wife Pat, Robert Sanders Scruggs , and by his daughter Susan Joyce Little and her husband David. He was affectionately called "Yaya" by his grandchildren: William Scruggs III and his wife Brandi, Kayklyn Kohl, Hallie Scruggs , Dwayne Edwards, Dani Bara, Donna Bara, Kacey Joyce Little, Nicholas Little, Andrea Little, Gabe Howe, Justin Scruggs , Brandon Scruggs and Megan Scruggs . Bill is survived by special nieces and nephews Karen Hall, Ted Scruggs , Jimmy Scruggs and Elaine Watson.
Bill, who was a life time Houstonian, graduated from Austin High School, and Rice University with a degree in Mechanical
Engineering. While at Rice, he served in the Naval Reserves, remained in the Reserves for 12 years, and served in the Korean War as a Lieutenant Commander on a LST 400. He worked as the chief engineer on many projects in Houston including the Rice Hotel, the Tenneco Building, NASA and the Mecom Fountain. He excelled in athletics throughout his life, playing football, baseball, basketball and track while at Rice and playing fast pitch softball for many years after college. He also enjoyed coaching little league football and was active in scouting with his sons. Bill and Joyce were active members of the Rice Alumni Association and the Scottish Heritage Society. He loved spending time with his family, fishing, listening to music and traveling. Bill was a longtime member of Gulfgate Christian Church and a faith member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church at the time of his death. He will be remembered for his intellect, love of life, family and friends, his laughter, his hugs, his integrity, honesty and strength of character.
"Well done my good and faithful servent" You left us peaceful memories, Your love is still our guide: And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
A celebration of his life will take place on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at 2:00pm at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. Iieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024-7729
